Your career will likely begin at the heart of a dental practice. As a dental assistant, you'll work directly with dentists during procedures, manage infection control by sterilizing instruments, and prepare patients for treatment. With additional schooling, you can advance to a dental hygienist role, gaining more autonomy to perform professional cleanings, screen for oral diseases, and educate patients on preventative care.

For those with significant clinical experience, a high-growth path is teaching. As a postsecondary health specialties instructor, you would train the next generation of assistants and hygienists in a college setting. Another option is becoming a dental laboratory technician, a highly skilled but declining field focused on crafting crowns and bridges.

The hands-on, interpersonal nature of these clinical roles makes them highly resistant to automation. AI has a very limited impact on the core work of assisting a dentist or cleaning a patient’s teeth, which is a genuine advantage. While teaching roles may see AI assist with administrative work, the fundamental need for human skill and patient trust in this field remains strong.
